More English Issues

Part 1) Well, my writing has thus far been, aweful! I have not written a successful paper yet. I feel I'm starting to get my voice back a little, however, I am misusing humor and my teacher is simply not appreciating what I am putting out. I feel that as my confidence in my research grows I will eventually pick it up in the writing category.

Part 2) Research is the real issue here it seems I need to learn to look at a piece of writing, read it thoroughly and and back up what Iam writing with facts. Now that Prof. Anastasia has brought my attention to projection I am becoming increasingly aware of my vulnerability in that area.

Part 3) That last paper we had to read sucks and if You (prof.) are reading this, I'm not attacking you in the least. I hope you will realize that. I also apologize for if I ranted a little in my paper about Featherstone's Encyclopaedia Project.

  1. Matt: I don't think I'm defensive, yet, but I also haven't read your assignment #6. As a teacher and as a student I think I struggle with balancing "venting" about a piece uncritically and trying to work with the ideas in a text in earnest (while also hating it at the same time). It's part of my teaching philosophy: it's much easier to complain than to engage with ideas you don't like, understand, or agree with. I always imagine someone else reading my writing and just ranting about it without first trying to think through my ideas--that makes me not want to write anything for public engagement.

Anyway, with regard to your style--I think I was maybe overly frank with you because I (and again, this is just my opinion) really like humor and wit that isn't just polemic or defensive. If one can do it with some art, I think it's an amazing thing. You have a good sense of humor and I like it when your voice comes through, but I think it's good to think about how your reader(s) might interpret your humor. Sometimes it comes off defensive (to this reader, at least).
